SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 6 Salisbury University
baseball team had three pitchers combine to throw 14 shutout
innings as the Sea Gulls swept Stevenson University 5-0 and 5-0 in
a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at
Sea Gull Field. The SU pitching staff has now posted five shutouts
in the past eight games for a total of 13 on the season. This was
the third doubleheader sweep for the Sea Gulls in the past 15 days
as the Sea Gulls now have nine doubleheader sweeps on the year.
Salisbury (29-4, 15-3 CAC) swept the season series with
Stevenson as they combined to outscore the Mustangs 29-0 in three
games. Salisbury was led in the opener by the fine pitching
performance of junior Chad Wolfe. Wolfe (5-1)
picked up his fifth victory of the year as scattered two hits and
struck out three in five innings of work. Junior southpaw
Kyle Starr (one strikeout) would relieve Wolfe in
sixth and threw two shutout innings.
The Sea Gulls, who are also ranked No. 2 in the national media
poll, had three players collect two hits in senior
Jordan Crystal (one RBI), junior
Ryan Smith (one RBI) and sophomore Brian
Green (two runs). Sophomore Andrew Miller
scored two runs and had one stolen base. Wolfe (one double) helped
his own cause as he registered one RBI. Stevenson's C.J. Milliken
(1-3) was saddled with the loss after he gave up two runs (one
earned) on two hits and two walks in two innings of work.
Sophomore Kyle Judson (7-0) stole the show in
the second game as he threw a complete-game seven inning shutout.
The right-hander gave up just one hit and two walks to register his
third win in his past three starts. He struck out a season-high
eight batters. This is his second complete game shutout of the year
and the fourth Salisbury shutout he has been a part of. Salisbury
leads Division III with a 2.21 team ERA.
The maroon and gold offense tallied four runs off
of Stevenson starter Steve Krider (1-2) in the second inning
to blow the second game open early. Salisbury's offense was guided
in the second game by Wolfe, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one
run. Smith (one run) also collected two hits while senior
Randy Boyle (one run) had one RBI.
This doubleheader was slated to be held at Stevenson on
Saturday, April 11, but rain and poor field conditions forced the
postponement and moved the games to Salisbury. Stevenson is now
14-16 overall and 10-8 in the conference.
Salisbury will be the top-seed in the upcoming CAC tournament
and will host University of Mary Washington in the first round on
Tuesday, April 14, at 3:30 p.m. The Sea Gulls swept the regular
season series between the two clubs as they outscored the Eagles
23-1.
