ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University
men's and women's tennis teams picked up two Capital Athletic
Conference victories against St. Mary's (Md.) College on Monday
evening. The matches were played at the Somerset Tennis Complex in
St. Mary's City, Md.
The SU women's team (11-4, 4-1 CAC) defeated St. Mary's (10-6,
2-2 CAC) 7-2. The Sea Gulls took two of three doubles points as
they received points from junior Jackie Burr and
senior Anna Marie Kable (No. 1 doubles) and junior
Kelly Fahrner and senior Robyn
Wendell (No. 2 doubles) both picked up wins in double
competition to give Salisbury a 2-1 lead going into singles play.
Burr (No. 1 singles), Fahrner (No. 2 singles), Kable (No. 3
singles) and Wendell (No. 4 singles) all picked up wins in singles
competitions, as well. Freshman Alix Royston (No.
5 singles) defeated St. Mary's Colleen O'Neil in straight sets 6-0,
6-0 to give the Sea Gulls their fifth singles win on the day.
The victory by the Sea Gull women's team gives SU coach
Randy Halfpap 99 career wins at his Alma Mater in
10 seasons. His current career record stands at 99-60.
Salisbury's men's team (11-6, 4-1 CAC) defeated St. Mary's
(11-7, 1-3 CAC) 6-3 on the way to its 11th win of the season. At
the end of doubles play the Sea Gulls, ranked seventh in the
Atlantic South Region, held a 2-1 lead. Salisbury then went on to
take four out of six matches in singles competition with wins by
sophomore Andrew Nottage (No. 1 single), junior
Marcus Robinson (No. 2 singles), sophomore
Giorgio Athans (No. 3 singles) and freshman
Curtis Quandt (No. 4 singles). The four wins in
singles competition gave the Gulls the win on the day with a score
of 6-3.
Coach Halfpap has a chance to win his 100th women's tennis match
on Thursday, April 16, on the road as the Sea Gulls travel to CAC
foe Wesley College for a 2:30 p.m. contest. Salisbury will then
host Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College at home for a
men's and women's match on Friday, April 17, at 2 p.m.
