SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University senior
Randy Boyle picked the right time to hit his first
home run in 23 games, a span of 52 days, when he connected on his
second home run of the season in the bottom of the 11th inning.
Boyle's home run gave top-seed Salisbury the thrilling
come-from-behind victory against second-seed York (Pa.) College in
the Capital Athletic Conference third round elimination game on
Saturday morning at Sea Gull Field.
Boyle had a big day at the plate as the Sea Gull shortstop
batted 3-for-4, drove in two runs and scored the game-winning run.
York pitcher Andy Rosenweig (6-3) suffered the loss as his only
mistake in two-third innings of work was the lone hit by Boyle.
Rosenweig came in to pitch in the 11th and struck out the first two
Sea Gull batters he faced. Boyle then stepped to the plate and
lined a Rosenweig pitch, opposite field, just over the right field
fence to end the game.
The No. 6 Sea Gulls (31-5) will turn around and face
fourth-seed Stevenson University today at 4 p.m. in the semifinal
round. The Mustangs (16-18) enter with a 2-0 record in this year's
CAC tournament. Salisbury, the three-time defending CAC champions,
improves its tournament record to 2-1. The winner between Stevenson
and Salisbury will advance to Sunday's championship game.
Senior pitcher Eric Willey (7-2) recorded the
win for Salisbury. He pitched a perfect final three and one-third
innings where he allowed no runs or hits and struck out four
Spartan batters. Junior Chad Wolfe started the
game and pitched five and one-third innings. He gave up four runs
on eight hits as he walked one and struck out one. Sophomore
Mark Peterson relieved Wolfe and pitched two and
one-third scoreless innings.
York (24-9) led 4-1 as the Sea Gulls came to bat in the bottom
of the seventh inning. Boyle plated freshman Bill
Morton (two hits, one run) on a sacrifice fly. Sophomore
Andrew Miller then got on base after he was hit by
the pitch. Miller then stole second base, his 20th swipe of the
season, and advanced to third on a passed ball. SU wasn't able to
plate Miller as designated hitter Will Evans
grounded out to end the inning.
The Gulls tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth
inning to tie the game at 4-4. Junior first baseman Mike
Celenza (two hits, two runs) led off with a single down
the right field line. Junior catcher Ryan Smith
(two hits, two RBIs) delivered the big blow with a two-run home run
to left field to knot the game at four.
SU had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth
inning when Celenza came to the plate with runners on second and
third base with two outs. York left-handed pitcher Jake Hughes
ended the threat as he struck out Celenza, the leading hitter for
the Sea Gulls with a .454 batting average.
The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead as York pushed across one
run in the first inning. Left fielder Mike Connolly scored on
single by catcher Rob Andrews. The score remained in York's favor
until the bottom of the fourth inning when SU senior infielder
Cody Collins (one hit, one RBI) drove in Celenza
to tie the game at 1-1. York took the lead again with a three-run
sixth inning. The big hit came off the bat of Spartan centerfield
Ryan Poff who blasted a two-run home run off Wolfe.
Third-seed Wesley College and fifth-seed St. Mary's (Md.)
College will meet in the other CAC third round game this afternoon
as the winner will advance to the championship game tomorrow. SU is
the host for the entire CAC tournament this weekend.
