SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 19
Salisbury University baseball team used a 22 hit attack to help pin
a 30-0 decision on Gallaudet University in a Capital Athletic
Conference contest on Thursday afternoon at Sea Gull Field. The Sea
Gulls have outscored their opponents 74- 12 over the past five
games. The 30 runs scored ties the record for runs scored in a game
during Coach Doug Fleetwood's tenure. In fact,
this is the second time in three games Salisbury has scored 30 runs
as the Sea Gulls plated the same amount against No. 12 York (Pa.)
College last Sunday in the first game of a doubleheader.
Salisbury (22-4, 10-3) had 13 players collect hits in the
victory. The Sea Gull offense was relentless as they tallied nine
extra base hits including five home runs. Senior Cody
Collins, the reigning CAC Player of the Week, led the way
with a 4-for-4 performance from the plate with two doubles and a
game-high four runs. Sophomore Andrew Miller
(three runs) smacked a two-run home run and knocked in a game-high
six RBIs. Junior Mike Celenza (one run) had three
RBIs and connected on his seventh home run of the season. SU had
six players register two RBIs in the game in Collins, juniors
Brian Green (one home run), Ryan
Smith (one run), Chad Wolfe (one run, one
double), sophomore Fred Kreiger (one run) and
freshman Matt Beck (two runs). Beck and Krieger
also connected on their first career home runs in the victory.
SU was equally as impressive on the mound. Sophomore starting
pitcher Dustin Herbert (5-1) went four perfect
innings en route to his fifth win of the season. The southpaw did
not allow a base runner as he fanned a career-high nine batters
including the last six Bison hitters he faced. Herbert would give
way to a trio of freshmen who would preserve the eighth shutout of
the season for Salisbury. Freshmen Mark Peterson
(one strikeout), Pat O'Keefe (two strikeouts), and
Daniel Trivits (one strikeout) each threw one
scoreless inning.
SU did not waste any time jumping on the Bison as the Sea Gulls
pounded out 10 runs in the first inning. Green and Celenza both
connected on two-run home runs in the inning while Collins ripped a
pair of doubles. Salisbury added another four runs in the second,
highlighted by a two-run single by Miller.
After another scoreless frame thrown by Herbert, the Sea Gulls
would tack on five more runs in the third. SU posted two hits in
the inning on a two-run single by Collins and a two-run home run by
Miller. The Salisbury onslaught continued over the next two innings
as SU tallied seven runs in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Gallaudet (2-18-1, 0-16) had two players collect one hit in Zane
Noschese and Kyle Kuschmider. Chester Kuschmider was saddled with
loss after he gave up 19 runs on 15 hits in three innings.
The Sea Gulls will take a day off before traveling to
Washington, D.C. for a doubleheader against Gallaudet University on
Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m.
