SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
women's tennis team will have another opportunity to dethrone
University of Mary Washington in the Capital Athletic Conference
championship this week. The second-seed Sea Gulls advanced to the
conference title match on Tuesday as Salisbury breezed past
third-seed York (Pa.) College, 8-1, at the SU Outdoor Tennis
Courts.
Salisbury (14-4), ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region,
swept doubles play and posted a 5-1 score during singles
competition. The match represented the final home contest for
Salisbury's three seniors; Anna Marie Kable,
Robyn Wendell and Lauren Bakker.
All three started at singles and Kable and Wendell picked up wins
in doubles and singles action.
SU began its strong day with a 3-0 lead at the end of doubles
play over the Spartans (5-11). The junior duo of Kelly
Fahrner and Rachel Iosue began the
competition with an 8-0 shutout over York's Heidi Acker and Keturah
Buchanan. They were followed by the team of junior Jackie
Burr and Kable who defeated Katelyn Acker and Paige
Doutrich, 8-2. Sophomore Angela Tenaglia and
Wendell rounded out doubles competition as they doubled up the York
duo of Megan Logan and Stephanie Nelson, 8-4.
The Sea Gulls continued their strong play in singles competition
as they won five of their six matches. Kable started of singles
play with a win over Heidi Acker in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 at third
singles. Fahrner's victory over Doutrich 6-1, 6-1 at second singles
clinched the match for the Sea Gulls. The Gulls continued their
dominance with three more wins. Wendell defeated Logan 6-2, 6-0 at
fourth singles, Tenaglia was victorious over Nelson 6-0, 6-1 at
fifth singles and Iosue won Salisbury's eighth point of the day
with a win over Katelyn Acker 6-1, 6-1 at first singles. The Sea
Gulls lone loss came in the last singles match of the day when York
College's Samantha Brenner defeated Bakker 6-3, 3-6, 13-11 as the
Spartan won the match in a super tiebreaker.
Salisbury last won the CAC Women's Tennis Championship in 2003.
The Sea Gulls have two conference crowns to their credit (2002,
'03). Mary Washington, ranked No. 10 in the nation and fifth in the
region, has won the past five conference titles. The Eagles have
won 16 total conference titles since 1991. The championship match
is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
