Sea Gulls fall to No. 12 Marlins in 2009 season opener

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University women's soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan College in front of 110 spectators at the SU Soccer Complex on Wednesday night.

The Sea Gulls (0-1) played strong in the first half of action as they were able to stay even with the Marlins (1-0) and created several quality scoring opportunities. The Marlins scored the game's lone goal in the 32nd minute after a failed clearance by an SU defender allowed Hanna Winkel of VWC to skirt free. Winkel played the ball in from the top of the box on the right side where Lindsey Asbury shot past SU freshman goal keeper Melissa Orgera (Arnold, Md.).

SU's best chance of the contest came in the 67th minute when an SU cross from the right side of the box found sophomore midfielder Mara Hauf (Baltimore, Md.) through traffic and Marlin goalkeeper Allison Lennox made a sprawling save to keep the lead.

The Marlins fired off 11 shots and had three corner kicks. The Sea Gulls had five shots. It was a physical contest as each team committed 14 fouls. Orgera takes the loss for the Gulls in her first collegiate start as she staved off five Marlin shots. Lennox picks up her first win of the season for the Marlins with two saves.

The Sea Gulls return to action this weekend where they host the annual SU Classic. Salisbury will take on Methodist University on Saturday at 2 p.m., and then square off against Guilford College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
