Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 2 Salisbury University
field hockey team claimed a 4-0 win over No. 12 Rowan University
(3-3) Wednesday night at Sea Gull Stadium to bounce back from
its loss to No. 1 Messiah College last Saturday.
Salisbury (7-1) scored in the first four minutes of the game to
take a 1-0 lead. The goal was scored by freshman midfielder
Kristina Fusco (Forest Hill, Md.), her fifth goal
of the year. Fusco, who made her first start of the season,
was assisted by sophomore back Tara McGovern (Yorktown
Heights, N.Y.). Salisbury held the 1-0 lead going into the
second half.
The Sea Gulls increased their lead to 2-0 in the second half on
a fast break goal scored by senior forward Beverly Beladino
(Putnam Valley, N.Y.) with an assist by senior
forward Lauren Correll (Bridgeville,
Del.). Correll raced down the left side of the
field and sent in the cross for Beladino, who dove to get a piece
of the ball and send it home for the insurance goal. The Sea
Gulls then put up two late goals within two minutes of one another.
Fusco tallied her second goal of the game with 11 minutes remaining
in the contest, quickly followed by Beladino's second goal of
the game off of another assist by Correll with nine minutes
remaining.
The Sea Gull offense was strong with a total of 12 shots, and
the defense was stiff, allowing only two Rowan
shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Cooke (Ann Arbor,
Mich.) made one save in the contest.
Salisbury will not return to Sea Gull Stadium until Oct. 20,
when it hosts Stevenson in its only remaining regular-season game
at home. The Sea Gulls' next game will take place on the road at
Wittenberg University on Sept. 26 at 3 p.m.
