SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
volleyball team had quite a successful evening, as the Sea Gulls
defeated both Goucher College and Johns Hopkins University in the
first day of the Sea Gull Volleyball Classic. Salisbury won both
matches decisively, as it first defeated Goucher in three
games (25-11, 25-14, 25-12) and then defeated Johns Hopkins in four
games (25-10, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22).
The maroon and gold were led by senior outside hitter
Rachel Downes (Salisbury, Md.), who posted 10 digs
in the victory against Johns Hopkins. Junior outside hitter
Melissa Stansbury (Eldersburg, Md.) also had 10
digs in a single match, against Goucher.
Senior libero Gabby Long (Bel Air, Md.),
freshman middle hitter Chelsea Glowacki (Poolesville,
Md.) and junior outside hitter Lexy Fitzkee
(Fallston, Md.) also had a hand in the Gulls' solid
victories. Long notched 18 digs in the win against Johns Hopkins,
while Fitzkee tallied up 20 kills in two matches. Glowacki had
three clutch blocks against Johns Hopkins, propelling the Sea Gulls
to a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the third game. The wins
today bring Salisbury's overall record to 15-1. The Gulls currently
boast a 13-match winning streak.
Salisbury hopes to extend this streak as it hosts the second and
final day of the Sea Gull Volleyball Classic tomorrow at Maggs
Physical Activities Center. The first match will be against
Virginia Wesleyan College at 10 a.m. The championship match (teams
TBD) will be played at 12 p.m.
