Box Score The No. 6-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team defeated
St. Mary's (Md.) College 8-0 in front of a crowd of 300 at Sea Gull
Stadium Saturday night. The win gives the Sea Gulls two Capital
Athletic Conference victories in their opening week of the 2009
season.
Salisbury (2-0, 2-0) dominated on both ends of the field,
outshooting St. Mary's 20-3, and the Sea Gull defense held the
Seahawks back so effectively, sophomore goalie Anna Cooke
(Ann Arbor, Mich.) did not need to make any saves in the
64 minutes she played in the game.
The Gulls were led offensively by senior forward Beverly
Beladino (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and junior midfielder
Kandice Hancock (Westover, Md.). Both players had
hat tricks in the game, with all of Hancock's goals being
unassisted. Senior forward Lauren Correll (Bridgeville,
Del.) rounded out the scoring for the Gulls, putting two
goals into the back of the box.
The win marks the 16th consecutive victory for the
Sea Gulls against St. Mary's (1-1, 1-1), including wins in the 2008
and 2007 Capital Athletic Conference championship games.
Salisbury will hit the road as they face Christopher Newport
University on Sept. 9, then head back home to host the SU
Invitational on Sept. 12 and 13.
