SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
women's soccer team defeated Methodist University 4-0 on the first
day of the SU Classic at the SU Soccer Complex Saturday. The Sea
Gulls improve to 1-1 on the season.
The Sea Gulls (1-1) scored their first goal of the 2009 season
on an unassisted goal by senior forward Christina
Eury (Germantown, Md.) in the 21st
minute. Eury was able to force the ball away from a Monarch (1-1)
defender and stormed off on a breakaway where she neatly placed the
ball past Kasey Nichols for the 1-0 lead.
Salisbury controlled play in the first half where they outshot
Methodist 8-3 and had two corner kicks to the Monarchs none.
The Sea Gulls struck again in the 60th minute when junior
midfielder Brenna Stuher (Madison, N.J.) collected
a deflected ball within the box and ripped the ball into the top of
the net for the 2-0 Sea Gull lead. Stuher would connect again in
the 73rd minute off a neatly placed ball from sophomore forward
Sam Ondrejcak (Waldorf, Md.) The maroon and gold
capped off their scoring just four minutes later in the 77th minute
when freshman forward Amanda Zyzak (Damascus, Md.)
blasted a ball from a yard outside the box over the goalkeeper's
head.
The Sea Gulls were able to play 24 players on the roster in the
victory. The Sea Gulls outshot the Monarchs 16-5 for the match.
Each team finished with four corner kicks apiece. SU freshman
goalkeeper Melissa Orgera (Arnold,
Md.) netted her first collegiate victory as she finished
with two saves.
