Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – When the Salisbury University volleyball team captured the first two sets of its match against Capital Athletic Conference opponent York (Pa.) College on Wednesday night, it seemed as if the Sea Gulls had the contest in the bag. The Spartans, however, thought otherwise. What ensued was a thrilling, back-and-forth match that ultimately resulted in a five-set (25-20, 27-25, 25-27, 23-25, 15-12) Salisbury victory. With the win, the Sea Gulls (19-10, 6-2 CAC) have won the past five straight matches.
Salisbury started off the evening on a high note, capturing a convincing first-set win against York (25-5, 5-3 CAC) and a narrow 27-25 victory in the second set. Going into the third game, it seemed as if the Sea Gulls would notch yet another straight-set victory – but the Spartans refused to go down without a fight, earning a 27-25 victory of their own, followed by a 25-23 victory, to take the contest to a fifth set.
The Sea Gulls buckled down in that fifth set and preserved the hard-fought "W". They were led by sophomore Carley Todd, who posted a team-high 16 kills and 24 set-assists. Melissa Stansbury, who was recognized before the game as part of the squad's "Senior Night", showed off her extensive experience on the court as she registered a team-high 25 digs.
Sophomores Chelsea Glowacki and Kelly Vieira also came up big in the victory, with Glowacki posting 12 kills and nine block-assists and Vieira notching a team high three service-aces.
Salisbury travels to St. Mary's City, Md., this weekend for two days of action at the Seahawk Invitational (Oct. 29-30). The Sea Gulls then set their sights on the CAC Tournament, hosting a first-round match against Stevenson University on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. Salisbury is seeded third in the conference.
