SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
baseball team picked up its first two wins of the season Saturday
in a doubleheader sweep against CAC opponent St. Mary's
College (Md.) at the SU Baseball Field.
The Sea Gulls (2-1, 2-0 CAC) shut out St. Mary's, 4-0, in the
first game behind the no-hit pitching of junior Dustin
Herbert (Huntingtown, Md.). Herbert pitched a
seven-inning complete game, striking out seven batters and only
giving up two walks.
The no-hitter is the first of Herbert's career, with his top
performances previously being four innings of no-hit baseball
against Gallaudet University last season and a complete-game,
one-hit performance on April 2, 2008 against St. Mary's.
Salisbury exploded for all four of its runs in the bottom of the
fifth inning. The big inning was led by junior Andrew Miller (Schwenksville, Pa.) and
senior Mike Celenza (Gaithersburg, Md.) who
both singled to drive in Salisbury's first three runs. Celenza's
single drove in two of the runs. Senior Ryan Smith (Waldorf, Md.) chipped in
with an RBI double to give the Gulls their 4-0 lead that would last
for the rest of the game.
The Seahawks (0-2, 0-2 CAC) found more offense in the
second game, but Salisbury still came out victorious, 4-3. The Sea
Gulls scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to
a wild pitch and a pass ball that each allowed one run to cross the
plate. Sophomore Bill Morton
(Newark, Del.) singled to drive in the other run in
the inning.
What would turn out to be the winning run of the game came off
of a solo homerun by junior Devon
Quaglietta (Monroe Township, N.J.) in the bottom of
the fifth. The shot was Quaglietta's first of the season and
second in his three years with Salisbury. St. Mary's
would try to battle back with a two-run homerun in the top of
the sixth to bring the score to 4-3. However, junior Mark
Peterson (Reisterstown, Md.) would hold off the
Seahawks to earn his first save of the year in two innings of work.
Peterson struck out three and gave up one hit.
Freshman Andrew
Levy (Hampstead, Md.) pitched four innings,
giving up only one run on three hits and four strikeouts to pick up
his first collegiate win.
The teams will close out the season series tomorrow at
the SU Baseball Field. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
