SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
baseball team completed its season series sweep of St. Mary's (Md.)
College on Sunday with a 5-1 win over the Seahawks at the SU
Baseball Field. The Sea Gulls have now won 18 of the last 19
meetings with St. Mary's.
The game started slow with St. Mary's (0-3, 0-3 CAC) scoring its
only run and the only run, of the first six innings, in the top of
the fourth. The unearned run was scored after an error by Salisbury
junior shortstop Will Evans (Salisbury, Md.).
But Evans would make up for the miscue later in the
game, scoring the game's winning run.
The Sea Gulls (3-1, 3-0 CAC) would open the flood gates for all
five of their runs in their final two at-bats. Junior
Andrew Miller (Schwenksville, Pa.) scored the
Gulls' first run, tying the game at 1-1, when senior
Tim Kellinger (Knoxville, Md.) reached
on a Seahawk error in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Salisbury's big inning came in the eighth, with four runs on
three hits. The Sea Gulls grabbed the lead, 3-1, as Miller ripped a
single into left field and drove in Evans and junior Brian
Green (Salisbury, Md.). Miller finished the game with
two runs scored and two RBI. Senior Trevor Cobb
(Hagerstown, Md.) would advance to third on the hit
which would allow him to then steal home plate during the next
at-bat. After a Kellinger single, one of his two hits, senior
Mike Celenza (Gaithersburg, Md.) was
intentionally walked to load the bases. Celenza also had two hits
in the game. The Sea Gulls' final run came on a bases-loaded walk
by senior Ryan Smith (Waldorf, Md.) allowing
Miller to score.
Junior pitcher Nathan
Young (Washington Township, N.J.) started the
game on the hill, working four innings. He struck out three and
gave up four hits. Junior pitcher Kevin
Story (Damascas, Md.) picked up the win, his
first of the year. He did not allow a hit and struck out two in an
inning and a third.
The Sea Gulls will play again on Monday as they host Washington
College at the SU Baseball Field at 2 p.m.
