Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
baseball team kept its home winning streak alive, taking down
Washington (Md.) College on Monday afternoon, 9-2. The Sea Gulls
have now won nine straight at the SU Baseball Field dating back to
the 2009 season.
The Sea Gulls (4-1, 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference) got another
late-inning surge to collect the win against the Shoremen (0-1),
scoring three times in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie.
Salisbury got things going in the bottom of the sixth, doing the
damage with two outs. After a double by senior catcher Ryan Smith (Waldorf,
Md.), the Shoremen recorded a pair of outs. But the
Sea Gull bats came through, thanks to RBI singles by junior
Brian Green
(Salisbury, Md.) and senior Trevor Cobb (Hagerstown,
Md.); a Washington error led to Salisbury's third run
of the inning, taking a 5-2 lead.
Salisbury came up with a run in the bottom of the seventh and
three more in the eighth to blow the game open.
The Shoremen took one-run leads in both the first and fourth
innings, but the Sea Gulls would even the score in the home half of
each inning.
Salisbury tied the game in the fourth inning on a ball that
traveled no more than 20 feet from home plate. Junior designated
hitter Devon Quaglietta
(Monroe Township, N.J.) began the inning with a
two-out double to left field, before advancing to third on a balk
by Washington starting pitcher Shane Mattingly. The added 90 feet
was what the Sea Gulls needed as Green hit a high chopper that
Mattingly came in to field. Quaglietta scampered home as Green beat
the throw at first.
Green and Quaglietta each finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate
while senior first baseman Mike Celenza (Gaithersburg,
Md.) was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, driving in
four runs.
Junior reliever Drew Baldwin
(Winston-Salem, N.C.) pitched two perfect innings,
collecting his first win of the season. He came on in relief of
junior Alex Buck (Averill Park,
N.Y.) who worked four innings, allowing Washington's
two runs, while giving up four hits and striking out four.
The Sea Gulls will play for the fourth-straight day tomorrow, as
they begin a stretch of three consecutive road contests, traveling
to Newport News, Va., to take on The Apprentice School, beginning
at 2 p.m.
