Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury
University's spring break may provide a period of relaxation
for some students, but the members of the No.2-ranked women's
lacrosse team were hard at work at Sea Gull Stadium on Sunday
afternoon as they soundly defeated Roanoke College, 21-7.
The Sea Gulls (7-0, 2-0 Capital Athletic Conference) and Maroons
(1-3) each had eight ground balls and nine clear attempts in the
first half, but that was as far as the similarities went; Salisbury
outshot Roanoke 23-7 and won 11 draw controls compared to the
Maroons' five. Senior attacker Beth Rhodey
(Fallston, Md.) opened up scoring for the Gulls in the
third minute of play, but the Maroons would quickly answer back
just over a minute later with a goal of their own. Rhodey scored
again after that, giving Salisbury a 2-1 advantage, followed by a
score by junior midfielder Aileen
McCausland (Phoenix, Md.). Roanoke's Carolyn
Miller netted her team's second goal in the sixth minute of
play, closing the gap to just a one-goal advantage for Salisbury,
but that would be as far as the Maroons got in the first half as
the Sea Gulls ticked off the next 10 consecutive goals to take a
13-2 advantage at the break. Eight different Sea Gulls scored goals
in the first half alone; four of those players notched two or
more.
The scoring continued for Salisbury in the second half, as
senior midfielder Jess
Chmielewski (Woodbine, Md.) and freshman attacker
Maggie Roundy (Ijamsville, Md.) notched
the Sea Gulls' 14th and 15th goals in
the first six minutes of the second half. Sophomore midfielder
Amanda Holsclaw (Abingdon, Md.) notched
Salisbury's 16th goal of the game, and her first
goal of the season, in the 49th minute of play.
The Sea Gulls outshot the Maroons 38-19 on the day; 32 of those
shots were on goal.
In all, 13 Sea Gulls netted goals in the victory: Rhodey,
McCausland, Chmielewski, Roundy, senior attack Kim Cudmore
(Bel Air, Md.), junior attackers Meagan
Osipowich (Hauppauge, N.Y.), Logan
Bilderback (Arnold, Md.) and Trish
DiGirolomo (Davidsonville, Md.), sophomore midfielders
Ashley Cudmore (Bel Air, Md.) and
Allie Wheatley (Cambridge, Md.), freshman
midfielder Roxanne Raab (Fallston,
Md.) and freshman attacker Katie Bollhorst (Severna Park, Md.). Raab led
the charge for the maroon and gold, netting a team-high four
goals in the victory.
Junior goalkeeper Julie Ann Caulfield (Drexel Hill, Pa.)
captured the win for the Gulls as she played the full first half
and made two saves. Time was shared in the second half between
freshman keepers Keli
Berkman (Salisbury, Md.) (three saves) and Caity Coleman (South Huntington, N.Y.) (two
saves).
The Sea Gulls will be on the road for their next game, against
Virginia Wesleyan College, on March 16. Their next game will be on
March 20, at home, against No. 1-ranked Franklin & Marshall
University in what is sure to be a talent-packed match-up between
the top two teams in the country.
