CLAREMONT, Calif. –
The Salisbury University tennis teams split their matches Tuesday
in California. The women topped Colorado College, 6-3, while the
No. 30 men fell to No. 12 Bowdoin College, 8-1.
The
Salisbury women (4-0, 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference) made a big
push in singles play to overcome a 2-1 deficit after the doubles
matches, claiming five of the six singles matches. The Sea Gulls
did not back down, winning all of their singles matches in straight
sets.
Freshman
Elaina Iosue (Damascus, Md.) got the
singles ball rolling, finishing her win first, 6-3, 6-1. Reigning
CAC Player of the Week Angela
Tenaglia (Clarksville, Md.) earned the win at No. 5
singles 6-2, 6-0 to give Salisbury a 3-2 lead. After Colorado
College tied the match at three, the final three matches belonged
to the Sea Gulls.
No. 1
Jackie Burr (Dover, Del.) won 6-4, 6-2,
Rachel Iosue (Damascus, Md.) earned the No. 2
singles win 6-2, 6-1 and freshman Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J.) won at No. 4
singles, 6-0, 7-5. Rachel Iosue and Kelly
Fahrner (Germantown, Md.) picked up Salisbury's
only doubles win, 8-4.
The No. 11-ranked doubles team of
seniors Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.) and Scott Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.)
earned Salisbury's only win on the men's side, taking
an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Bowdoin
swept the singles matches, but not without a fight. Junior
David Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.) took his
No. 2 match to three sets, falling 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Junior Andrew Nottage (Huntingdon, Md.) also split
the first two sets, falling 6-2, 3-6, 10-6.
The teams
will be back in action on Wednesday, continuing their stay on the
west coast. The women will take on University of La Verne while the
men (3-3, 1-0 CAC) will play at Whittier College.
