ABERDEEN, Md. – The
No. 7 Salisbury University baseball team remained perfect in the
Capital Athletic Conference and extended its current winning streak
to five games by taking down Stevenson University, 9-7, on
Wednesday afternoon.
The Sea
Gulls (14-2, 8-0 CAC) took an early lead, scoring six runs in the
first three innings to take a 6-1 lead, and were able to hold off a
late push by the Mustangs to collect the victory.
Salisbury
plated three runs in the first inning on three hits, including a
two-run double by senior Chad Wolfe
(Thurmont, Md.). Another two-run double, this time by
sophomore Bill Morton (Newark, Del.), in the
third inning gave Salisbury the five-run lead it would carry into
the seventh inning.
The Sea
Gulls would stretch the lead to 9-1 midway through the eighth
inning before the Mustangs would start to get to Salisbury starter
junior Dustin Herbert (Huntingtown, Md.).
Stevenson put five runs on the board in the home half of the
eighth, knocking Herbert from the game during the inning, but the
Salisbury bullpen closed the door to finish off the win.
Herbert
collected the victory to improve his record to 5-0, allowing six
runs in 7 1/3 innings, while striking out six Mustang batters.
Three Salisbury relievers finished off the game with Wolfe
recording the final two outs to collect his second save of the
season.
Wolfe,
senior Ryan Smith (Waldorf, Md.) and juniors
Devon Quaglietta (Monroe Township, N.J.),
Brian Green (Salisbury, Md.) and Brad
Baylis (Pocomoke, Md.) each finished the game with two
hits.
Salisbury
will be back in action on Friday, March 26, when it will host
University of Mary Washington in a CAC doubleheader beginning at 2
p.m. It will mark the first of three-straight days of home games
for the Sea Gulls, who will welcome Stevenson on Saturday for a
doubleheader and Ithaca College on Sunday for a single game.
