SALISBURY, Md. – With the bases loaded
and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, junior Fred
Kreiger (Hagerstown, Md.)smashed the first pitch of
his first at-bat of the game into right-center field to drive in
the winning run. The Salisbury University baseball team defeated
CAC foe Wesley College, 4-3, on Wednesday thanks to Kreiger's
hit.
Wesley (12-9, 8-5 CAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first
inning before Salisbury began the comeback with its first run
in the bottom of the third inning. The Wolverines would score their
third run in the fifth inning, but that was it as the Sea Gulls
(17-3, 10-1 CAC) shut them down for the rest of the game.
Salisbury scored single runs in both the sixth and eighth
innings to tie the game at three going into the ninth. Senior
Tim Kellinger (Knoxville, Md.) singled
to drive in the run in the sixth, and Kreiger scored on a single by
senior Chad Wolfe (Thurmont, Md.) in the
eighth after pinch running for Ryan Smith
(Waldorf, Md.).
In the ninth inning, junior Mark
Peterson (Reisterstown, Md.) retired
Wesley's hitters 1-2-3 to set up Salisbury for the chance to
finish the comeback. The Sea Gulls didn't disappoint.
Kellinger reached on an error to start the ninth inning and moved
to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. Senior Mike
Celenza (Gaithersburg, Md.) and junior Brian
Green (Salisbury, Md.) were both intentionally walked
to load the bases and bring up Kreiger who would then win the game
for Salisbury.
Junior Dustin Herbert (Huntington, Md.)
started the game going seven innings giving up only three runs (two
earned) on seven hits and striking out eight. Peterson picked
up the win, his first of the season, in a two-inning relief
appearance. He struck out three and only allowed one hit.
The Sea Gulls will be in action again when they travel to Wesley
for a CAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 3. First pitch is set for
1 p.m. Salisbury returns home to face Catholic University of
America on Monday, April 5 at 3:30 p.m.
