Box Score 2 SALISBURY, Md. – The
No. 6 Salisbury University baseball team entered Sunday's
Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader against the University of
Mary Washington needing just one win to lock up the top seed in the
upcoming CAC tournament. Salisbury swept the twinbill, battling
from behind in both contests, for a 6-5 win in the first and a 9-8
victory in the nightcap.
Salisbury
earned the top seed with a 6-5 come-from-behind win in the first
game. Mary Washington took a 2-0 lead after the top of the first
inning, on a pair of solo home runs. Though the Sea Gulls would get
a run back in the first, they would not take their first lead of
the game until the home half of the sixth inning.
Salisbury
entered the sixth trailing 5-4, but that would change quickly.
Junior Andrew Miller (Schwenksville, Pa.) led
off the inning with a four-pitch walk. Miller was retired at second
on a groundball by Brad Baylis
(Pocomoke, Md.), but Baylis was able to beat the relay
throw at first. Senior Brian Green
(Salisbury, Md.) helped the Sea Gulls capitalize on
Baylis' hustle by blasting a no-doubt home run to left-center
field. The two-run shot, Green's seventh of the
year, gave Salisbury the 6-5 lead.
The blast
made a winner of junior Drew Baldwin
(Winston-Salem, N.C.) who worked 3 2/3 innings in
relief. He gave way to senior Chad Wolfe
(Thurmont, Md.) who was able to work out of a jam in
the top of the seventh for his fourth save of the season.
The Eagles
began the seventh with a double and a single to put runners at the
corners with no outs. Wolfe was able to get a pop out to shallow
left field, keeping the runners in place. A groundball to Green at
third base began a 5-4-3 double play that would end the game and
clinch the regular-season title for the Gulls.
The second
game saw a similar start as the Eagles (18-10, 10-8 CAC) jumped out
to an 8-3 through the top of the fifth inning before Salisbury
began to chip away. The Sea Gulls (22-6, 14-4 CAC) put up three
runs in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 8-4. Senior Mike
Celenza (Gaithersburg, Md.) and sophomore Nick
Walls (Federalsburg, Md.) each drove in runs in the
inning.
But the
real damage came in the bottom of the seventh when Salisbury put
together five runs, on four hits and took advantage of three Mary
Washington errors to earn the win. Wolfe came home for the game
winner on a ground ball by sophomore Bill Morton
(Newark, Del.) that should have been the final out of
the inning, but was bobbled by the Mary Washington defense.
The
seventh-inning rally made junior Alex Duda
(Madison, Conn.) a winner for the first time this
season. Duda worked one scoreless innings, striking out one
batter.
By virtue
of being the top seed in the CAC tournament, the Sea Gulls will
host an opening-round game on Tuesday, April 13. Salisbury will
host the No. 6 seed Wesley College at the SU Baseball Field. The
first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
