FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury
University women's tennis team gave the No. 16 University of Mary
Washington its toughest test against a Capital Athletic Conference
opponent this season in Thursday's CAC tournament championship
match, but the Eagles still prevailed to win their seventh straight
conference title, 7-2.
The Sea Gulls are the only team in the CAC to win any individual
match against Mary Washington (15-7) this season, falling 8-1
earlier in the season. Thursday, Salisbury jumped out to a 2-1 lead
through the doubles play, winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
Senior Jackie Burr
(Dover, Del.) and freshman Jillian
Poppe (Califon, N.J.) claimed the No. 1 doubles match,
8-6, while freshman Elaina
Iosue (Damascus, Md.) and junior Angela
Tenaglia (Clarksville, Md.) won 9-8 at No. 3 doubles,
taking the tie-breaker 7-5.
Salisbury (13-3) led in the first set in three of the six
singles matches. Tenaglia and Iosue each won the first set of their
No. 5 and 6 singles matches, respectively. The pair lost the second
sets of their matches and were held off in the third set
tie-breaker. Tenaglia fell 4-6, 6-0, 10-7 while Iosue's final score
was 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-4.
