TOWSON, Md. – The No. 11 Salisbury
University baseball team took an early lead against Frostburg State
University Wednesday afternoon and turned that into a 6-2 win.
The Sea Gulls (26-9) pounded out 11 hits in the contest, all but
one being singles, but it was enough to bring home six runs. The
scoring started in the top of the first inning, as Salisbury's
first three batters reached base, and two came around to score.
Junior Brian Green
(Salisbury, Md.) sent junior Andrew
Miller (Schwenksville, Pa.) home on a sacrifice fly
and senior Chad Wolfe
(Thurmont, Md.) singled home junior Brad Baylis
(Pocomoke, Md.).
A Wolfe sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth allowed Baylis to
score again, stretching the Salisbury lead to 3-0. In the inning
senior Mike Celenza
(Gaithersburg, Md.) singled to right field advancing Baylis. The
hit was Celenza's 242nd in his career, tying him with Nick Pegelow
for first on the Salisbury all-time list.
The Bobcats (27-10) got to Salisbury starting pitcher Kyle
Judson (Gaithersburg, Md.) in the bottom of the fifth
inning with two runs on two hits. They were the only runs and hits
Judson would allow in his five innings of work, as he collected his
fifth win of the season.
The Sea Gulls got two runs in the top of the sixth on a double
by Miller to push the lead back to three runs. Senior Matt
O'Keefe (Gaithersburg, Md.) drove home Salisbury's
final run, in the top of the seventh, on the last of his
career-high four hits in the game.
Senior Kyle Starr
(Lusby, Md.) worked the final four innings of the game to collect
his second save of the season.
The game marked the first meeting between the two programs since
the 2003 season, but should be the first of many over the next few
years as Frostburg State will join the Capital Athletic Conference
next season. Salisbury's next scheduled game will be a doubleheader
against Neumann College on Saturday, May 8 at the SU Baseball
Field.
