DOVER, Del. – The
No. 6 Salisbury University baseball team split its Capital Athletic
Conference doubleheader at Wesley College Saturday afternoon,
falling in extra innings in the first game, 5-4, before bouncing
back for an 11-1 win in the second game.
The Sea
Gulls got the offense going early in the second game, scoring a run
in the first as junior Andrew
Miller (Schwenksville, Pa.) came home on a groundout
by senior Brian Green (Salisbury, Md.), and
adding two more in the second for a 3-0 lead. The big blow of the
second inning was a solo home run off the bat of senior Chad
Wolfe (Thurmont, Md.), his second home run of the
season. Miller also drove home a run in the second.
Wesley was
able to get one run back against starting pitcher Kyle Judson
(Gaithersburg, Md.), cutting the lead to 3-1 in the
third, but the junior would allow no more. Judson earned his third
win of the season, giving up just two hits and two walks while
striking out eight in six innings of work.
Salisbury
kept the runs coming, scoring three more in the top of the fourth
including a solo home run by senior Tim
Kellinger (Knoxville, Md.). The Sea Gulls added five
runs in the sixth to cap the scoring. Junior Devon
Quaglietta (Monroe Township, N.J.) added his third
home run of the year, a three-run shot, during the sixth.
Salisbury
got on the board first in the opener with a run in the top of the
first, but the Wolverines answered back with three in the home
half. The Sea Gulls were able to tie the game, but could not take
the lead back at any point in the first game.
Miller
drove home the game-tying run in the top of the sixth with a single
up the middle. The hit allowed Kellinger to score.
Sophomore
Nate Young (Washington Township, N.J.)
battled through five innings on the hill, allowing six hits while
walking four and striking out five. Junior Mark
Peterson (Reisterstown, Md.) took the loss, working
two innings in relief.
The Sea
Gulls will play three straight days in Salisbury this week, hosting
Catholic University of America on Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., at
the SU Baseball Field. Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m., the Sea Gulls
will head to Arthur W. Perdue Stadium for an exhibition game
against the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Class-A affiliate of the
Baltimore Orioles. Then Salisbury will get back to CAC action
hosting York (Pa.) College on Wednesday afternoon.
