SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 6 Salisbury
University baseball team entered Tuesday's exhibition game
against the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Class-A affiliate of the
Baltimore Orioles, with 14 players that had playing experience in
Arthur W. Perdue Stadium thanks to last season's trip to the
NCAA Tournament held at the Shorebirds' home.
For the players that got their first taste of a professional
stadium, it was a chance of a lifetime. Salisbury got to break out
the wood bats and play against the pros for one night, coming up
with a strong showing.
The night was about more than just baseball as all of Salisbury
University's student-athletes were recognized as part of the
NCAA's National Student-Athlete Day for their work on the
field, in the classroom and in the community.
SU Idol winner Christopher Williams sang the national anthem
prior to the start of the game and Samantha Aylor, president of
Alpha Sigma Tau sorority, threw out the first pitch in front of a
crowd of 3,573.
Salisbury was able to put together two three-run innings,
busting out in the top of the third inning and in the top of the
fifth. Junior Brad Baylis
(Pocomoke, Md.) drove in the Sea Gulls' first
run of the game on an infield single; later in the inning, a single
by senior Mike Celenza (Gaithersburg, Md.) drove
in Baylis and junior Andy Miller
(Schwenksville, Pa.).
Baylis, Celenza and junior Brian Green
(Salisbury, Md.) each drove in runs during the
three-run fifth inning. Ultimately, the Shorebirds prevailed in the
exhibition by a score of 9-6 in seven innings of play.
The Salisbury pitching staff impressed against professional
hitting, with freshman Jimmy
Lanning (Frederick, Md.) working the sixth inning,
allowing no hits and walking just one. Salisbury pitching combined
to strike out five batters in the game's seven innings.
The Sea Gulls will return to their home turf tomorrow afternoon
to face York (Pa.) College in Capital Athletic Conference action.
The game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
