SALISBURY, Md.
– The No. 6 Salisbury University baseball team suffered its
fifth loss of the 2010 season Wednesday afternoon, falling to
Capital Athletic Conference foe York (Pa.) College 24-5 at the SU
Baseball Field. The loss is Salisbury's largest margin of
defeat in the past 10 years.
The Spartans finished the game
with 31 hits, including eight home runs, eight doubles and a
triple. York's eight home runs and 64 total bases both mark
new Capital Athletic Conference records.
Salisbury starter Dustin Herbert (Huntingtown, Md.) took the
loss, allowing seven runs in 4 1/3 innings of work. Herbert was one
of eight pitchers to get work for the Sea Gulls.
Seven different Sea Gulls had
one hit in the game, as York starter Jason Christenberry scattered
five hits and struck out nine in 7 1/3 innings on the hill.
Salisbury's biggest hit of
the day, the only one for extra bases, was a solo home run by
sophomore Bill Morton (Newark, Del.) in the ninth
inning. The shot was Morton's second of the season. Morton,
seniors Chad Wolfe (Thurmont, Md.), Ryan
Smith (Waldorf, Md.) and Mike Celenza
(Gaithersburg, Md.) each drove in runs in the
game.
The Sea Gulls (19-5, 11-3
Capital Athletic Conference), who now hold a one-game lead in the
Capital Athletic Conference standings over both York (16-9, 11-5
CAC) and the University of Mary Washington (17-6, 10-4 CAC),
will now have two key doubleheaders remaining in the CAC. Salisbury
will travel to York, Pa. on Saturday, the first game scheduled
to begin at 1 p.m., and the team will host Mary Washington on
Sunday. That doubleheader also slated to begin at 1 p.m. The CAC
tournament will begin next Tuesday, April 13.
