SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 11 Salisbury
University baseball team split its doubleheader with No. 1 Johns
Hopkins University on Saturday at the SU Baseball Field. Johns
Hopkins took the first game, 4-2, before the Sea Gulls ended the
Blue Jays' 33-game win streak with a 6-4 victory in the second
game.
Saturday was senior day for the Sea Gulls as the Salisbury
seniors laced up their cleats for their last games at the SU
Baseball Field.
Salisbury (27-10) won the second game after exploding for five
runs in the sixth inning as it batted around the lineup. With a
combination of two hits, four walks and one Blue Jay error,
Salisbury was able to take a 6-2 lead in the inning that would
eventually give the Gulls the win. The Blue Jays made a comeback
attempt in their half of the seventh with two runs to bring the
score to 6-4, but sophomore Bill Morton (Newark,
Del.) came in to shut down Johns Hopkins (39-4) for the
final two outs of the game.
Freshman catcher Robert Hite
(Crofton, Md.) led the Sea Gulls with two RBI. Junior
Fred
Kreiger (Hagerstown, Md.), senior Matt O'Keefe
(Gaithersburg, Md.) and junior Andrew Miller
(Schwenksville, Pa.) all pitched in with one RBI each.
Kreiger, Miller and junior Brian Green
(Salisbury, Md.) all had two hits in the game.
In the first game, Salisbury took a 2-1 lead in the fourth
inning after a bases-loaded single by senior Ryan Smith (Waldorf,
Md.). Johns Hopkins would come back to tie the game
in the sixth inning; that tying run would eventually cause the
contest to go into extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning,
Blue Jay centerfielder Dave Kahn blasted a two-run home run that
would lead Johns Hopkins to victory over the Sea Gulls, 4-2.
Senior Kyle Starr (Lusby,
Md.) started the game for Salisbury, pitching seven
innings and holding Johns Hopkins to only two runs on four hits. He
struck out two batters.
Salisbury will conclude its regular season schedule on Wednesday
as the Sea Gulls travel to face off against Montclair State. First
pitch is set for 3 p.m.
