Sea Gulls drop 1-0 decision at Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday night in a non-conference contest.

It was a defensive effort for the Sea Gulls (2-5) as they were able to hold the Marlins (2-2-1) to just one goal in the contest. Virginia Wesleyan outshot Salisbury 6-2 in the first frame, but SU was able to keep the Marlins' offense at bay thanks to a great defensive effort.

The Marlins broke through in the second half as Christina Fernandes scored an unassisted goal from 10 yards out in the 51st minute. In the second stanza, the Marlins fired off 12 shots but sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Orgera and the SU defense were able to keep the Sea Gulls in the contest. SU's final shot of the match came from sophomore defender Kira Mangone, but was blocked away by a VWC defender.

For the match, Orgera posted four saves in 90 minutes of action for the Sea Gulls, while Erica Keil staved off two shots for the Marlins.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action this Saturday when they travel to take on Capital Athletic Conference foe York (Pa.) College at 1 p.m.
