Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Salisbury
University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Virginia
Wesleyan College on Wednesday night in a non-conference
contest.
It was a defensive effort for the Sea Gulls (2-5) as they were able
to hold the Marlins (2-2-1) to just one goal in the contest.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot Salisbury 6-2 in the first frame, but SU
was able to keep the Marlins' offense at bay thanks to a great
defensive effort.
The Marlins broke through in the second half as Christina Fernandes
scored an unassisted goal from 10 yards out in the 51st minute. In
the second stanza, the Marlins fired off 12 shots but sophomore
goalkeeper Melissa
Orgera and the SU defense were able to keep the Sea
Gulls in the contest. SU's final shot of the match came from
sophomore defender Kira
Mangone, but was blocked away by a VWC
defender.
For the match, Orgera posted four saves in 90 minutes of action for
the Sea Gulls, while Erica Keil staved off two shots for the
Marlins.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action this Saturday when they travel
to take on Capital Athletic Conference foe York (Pa.) College
at 1 p.m.
