Box Score YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University
women's soccer team suffered its first Capital Athletic Conference
loss of the 2010 season on Saturday afternoon, falling at York
(Pa.) College, 4-2.
The Spartans got on the scoreboard first, with two goals in the
opening 27 minutes. Steph Mergler gave York a 1-0 lead in the 19th
minute on a long unassisted shot, before the lead doubled on
Caitlin Aversa's breakaway goals eight minutes later.
Salisbury (2-6, 1-1 CAC) was able to cut into the lead in the
33rd minute when junior Sarah
Jessilonis put home her third goal of the season, off
an assist from freshman Colleen
O'Connell, cutting the Spartan lead to 2-1.
York (1-4-1, 1-1 CAC) got a pair of second half goals by Ali
Jones, stretching its advantage to 4-1 before the Sea Gulls were
able to tally the match's final score in the 65th minute. Sophomore
Julia
Finecey finished off an assist by Bonnie
Sandone to cut the lead to 4-2, but the Sea Gulls
would get no closer.
Salisbury fired 10 shots in the game, with eight of them being
on target, but York keeper Sarah Spanarkel was able to turn
away six Sea Gull shots to earn the victory.
Salisbury sophomore goalkeeper Melissa
Orgera made one save in the first half for the Sea
Gulls and freshman Lauren
West saw action in the second half, also
recording one save, while playing the final 45 minutes.
The Sea Gulls will continue a stretch of seven straight games
away from the SU Soccer Complex next Saturday, Sept. 25, when they
travel to St. Mary's (Md.) College and try to get back to their
winning ways in the Capital Athletic Conference.
