Sea Gulls claim top spot in CAC with overtime victory against St. Mary's (Md.)

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Junior forward Sarah Pfundstein scored two minutes into overtime as the Salisbury University women's soccer team closed out its 2011 Capital Athletic Conference schedule with a victory over St. Mary's (Md.) College, 2-1, on Senior Day at the SU Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon. The win clinches the top seed in the upcoming CAC tournament, and with it, a first-round bye.

Salisbury (11-4-2, 7-1 CAC) opened the scoring eight minutes into the contest when junior midfielder Casey Hafford took a cross from sophomore forward Colleen O'Connell just outside of the goal box and ripped a left-footed shot into the upper right side of the net. The 1-0 advantage held up for close to 60 minutes of play before Marilyn Hucek finished off a rebound from the left side to tie the contest at 1-1.

Salisbury managed to take six second-half shots (four on goal) but the St. Mary's defense would hold strong and move the contest into the extra session. SU wasted no time in the overtime period as O'Connell picked up her second assist of the day to set up Pfundstein and cement SU's best regular-season record since the 2007 season.

The Sea Gulls were led in the contest by O'Connell's two assists and Pfundstein's goal but benefitted from an outstanding defensive performance as well. Freshman goalkeeper Michelle Conrad picked up her 11th win of the year as she tallied one save. The Sea Gulls saw four players rip two shots in the contest, with junior defender Erin Mooney leading the way with three.

Salisbury outshot St. Mary's, 15-7, and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

St. Mary's (5-6-1, 2-4-1 CAC) registered six shots in the game and was led by Hucek (two shots) and Johanna Rambo (one assist). Kelsey Wertz made seven saves in the loss.

The Sea Gulls remain at home for their next contest on Tuesday, October 25 against Eastern University at 3:30 p.m. The game is the final regular season tune-up for the squad before it competes in the CAC tournament.
