Salisbury claims seventh CAC volleyball title with 3-0 win against Stevenson

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 victory Saturday night against Stevenson University, collecting the program's seventh Capital Athletic Conference championship and with it the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.

After a tight first set, which Salisbury won 25-22, the Gulls (31-3) earned matching 25-15 wins in the second and third sets to seal the deal, hitting .351 in the match while limiting the Mustangs (31-3) to a .118 hitting percentage.

The first set was tied 10 times before the Sea Gulls were able to pull away. Junior Carley Todd registered four of her eight kills of the night in the first game, including one that broke an 18-18 tie. From that point, Salisbury outscored the Mustangs 7-4 to take the set.

Salisbury jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set, getting two points on assisted blocks from Todd and junior Kelly Vieira. The blocks were two of four in the set for the Sea Gulls, who registered nine blocks in the match, led by junior Chelsea Glowacki's one solo block and five block assists.

Salisbury continued to pull away in the second set, putting together four-straight points, ending with a pair of kills from sophomore Sam Seifert, to stretch the lead to 19-10. Seifert had four of her match-best 10 kills in the second set.

Leading by just three points, 14-12, in the third and final set, Salisbury put off any chance of a Stevenson rally with a quick 8-2 run. Junior Kristin Jehle put home a pair of kills in the closing points of the match. Jehle was one of three Sea Gulls to finish with five kills, along with Glowacki and junior Jenna Shay.

Todd added 19 assists to go with three kills and four blocks, while senior Lindsey Saltzman had 15 assists and six digs.

The Sea Gulls will await the release of the NCAA tournament bracket on Monday to see where they play their opening-round match and who their opponent will be on Friday, Nov. 11. The Sea Gulls will be making their seventh overall appearance in the NCAA tournament and fourth in the past five seasons.
