Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 21 ranked Salisbury University baseball team dropped its 2011 home opener to No. 2 Cortland State on Sunday, 3-0, at the SU Baseball Field.
Salisbury opened up the contest with the game's first two hits in the first inning. Junior catcher Tyler Bennett singled to centerfield for the Gulls' first hit of the game. He was followed by senior designated hitter Devon Quaglietta who singled through the right side of the infield. But a flyout ended the threat, stranding both runners.
The Red Dragons (1-3) drew first blood in the second inning. After a Sea Gull error that allowed the inning to stay alive, two unearned runs gave Cortland a 2-0 lead. Cortland's final run would come in the third inning to give it the 3-0 lead.
Quaglietta picked up his second hit of the game in the seventh inning as he singled up the middle. He finished the game batting 2-for-4. Senior second baseman Fred Kreiger also had a hit in the game.
Senior pitcher Chris Greiner made his Sea Gull home debut in the game pitching the final five innings in relief of senior Kyle Judson. Greiner shut down Cortland's offense as he allowed only one hit and struck out five batters. The five strikeouts give him a total of 11 in his first two appearances in a Salisbury uniform.
The Sea Gulls (0-2) will be back in action this weekend with a pivotal three-game Capital Athletic Conference series against York (Pa.) College at the SU Baseball Field. The series begins Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. and concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
