Sea Gulls defeat Generals 7-4; Tokosch leads the way with team-high five caused turnovers

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 2-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team picked up a 7-4 non-conference victory over visiting Washington & Lee University in front of 493 in attendance at Sea Gull Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The seven goals scored is the lowest total by the Sea Gulls (3-0) in a victory since a 6-3 win over Denison University on March 16, 2008.

In today's contest, junior attackman Tony Mendes tallied the game's first goal as he fired the ball into the net off an assist from junior attackman Erik Krum. That would be the only goal scored in the first quarter, as there were a combined 14 turnovers in the first 15 minutes.

The second quarter saw a surge of scoring, as each team would tally three goals in the frame. Mac Means got the Generals (1-2) on the board, as he tallied an unassisted goal at the 11:21 mark. The Sea Gulls would outscore the Generals 3-2 to close out the quarter, as junior attackman Matt Cannone tallied a pair of goals.

At halftime, the Sea Gulls had won eight-of-nine face-offs, picked up 22 ground balls compared to just 14 for the Generals and outshot the visitors 12-4. SU was a perfect 14-for-14 on clears, while W&L was held to just 10-of-17 on clear attempts.

The third quarter was all Salisbury, as Cannone, Krum and senior midfielder Perry Craz tallied the only goals of the quarter.

Washington & Lee closed out the scoring in the contest, as Jack Switala converted a man-up opportunity at the 11:34 mark off an assist from Scott Meehan.

For the game, SU outshot W&L 30-20, held a 34-24 ground ball advantage and won 13-of-15 face-offs.

Cannone led the way for the Sea Gulls, as the junior posted a game-high three goals, caused three turnovers and scooped up one ground ball. Zordani posted a pair of assists in the contest, while junior midfielder Sam Bradman and Krum each chipped in with one goal and one assist.

SU goalkeeper Johnny Rodriguez earned his third victory of the season, as the senior posted four saves. Salisbury senior defender Collin Tokosch captured a team-high five caused turnovers, which matches his career-high.

Switala led the Generals with a team-high two points, on one goal and one assist. Ned Lundvall put in a valiant effort for three quarters for Washington & Lee, as he staved off 10 shots, including eight in the first half alone. Jason Lumpkin played the final quarter for W&L and finished with one save.

The Sea Gulls are set to hit the road for their next contest, a non-conference game at McDaniel College next Wednesday. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
