Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 21 Salisbury University baseball team picked up its first win of the 2011 season on Saturday afternoon, taking down York (Pa.) College, 10-3, at the SU Baseball Field.
The Sea Gulls got the scoring started with a pair of runs in the first inning. Senior Brad Baylis opened the inning with a one-out single up the middle and came around to score when junior Tyler Bennett doubled to right-center field. Bennett advanced to third when the throw home to get Baylis was late and scored on senior Devon Quaglietta's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
It was the first of three scoring innings to start the game for the Gulls (1-2, 1-0 CAC). Salisbury put up three runs (two unearned) in the second inning, utilizing a pair of squeeze bunts by Baylis and Bennett to plate freshmen Joey Jones and Bill Root.
Three more runs in the bottom of the third pushed the Sea Gull lead to 8-0, as the Gulls needed just one hit in the inning, taking advantage of a pair of miscues by York (1-4, 0-1 CAC).
The eight runs were more than enough for Salisbury starting pitcher Chris Greiner who worked 7 1/3 strong innings to collect his first victory in a Sea Gull uniform.
After cruising through much of his outing, Greiner had to work out of a jam in the top of the seventh inning. The first two batters reached base, including a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Greiner was able to strand both runners in scoring position by putting together back-to-back strikeouts and ending the threat with a flyout.
The senior struck out four and scattered eight hits. He departed with a pair of runners on base in the eighth. The runners came home on Justin Cohen's three-run home run.
Bennett and Baylis each finished with two hits in the game, as did third baseman Matt Beck, who was 2-for-3, to lead the Sea Gull offense.
The key early-season CAC series will close out with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The first of two seven-inning contests will begin at noon.
