Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 21 Salisbury University baseball team fell in the final inning at the University of Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon, 7-6; the loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Gulls.
Salisbury fell behind 4-0 to the Eagles (12-3, 4-2 Capital Athletic Conference), but would mount a mid-game comeback. The Sea Gulls pushed their first run across in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by junior Chris Connor, allowing senior Devon Quaglietta to score, cutting the lead to 4-1.
A five-run seventh inning allowed the Sea Gulls (9-4, 7-2 CAC) to take their first lead of the game. Salisbury put together five hits in the inning, led by senior Brad Baylis' two-run single up the middle, which gave the Gulls the 6-4 lead at the time.
The Eagles would have an answer in their final at-bat. A single, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases for UMW with two outs before freshman Mitchell Herringshaw singled up the middle off Salisbury senior reliever Drew Baldwin. Two runs came home on the walk-off hit.
Senior Nathan Young started on the hill for the Gulls, working 6 1/3 innings, allowing 11 Eagle hits and striking out two before giving way to Baldwin. Baldwin came on in the seventh with two on and one out, working out of the jam, allowing just one run and retiring the side with just a walk in the eighth.
Salisbury put together eight hits on the day, led by senior Brian Green, who was 2-for-4 with a double.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Shenandoah University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
