Sea Gulls put up 11 runs in win against Apprentice School

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 21 Salisbury University baseball team picked up a convincing 11-5 victory over the Apprentice School on Wednesday afternoon, running the Sea Gulls' winning streak to four games.

Salisbury (4-2, 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference) got an outstanding start from pitcher Nathan Young. The senior, in his first appearance of the 2011 season, allowed six hits by Apprentice batters while striking out a pair in five innings of work.

The Sea Gull offense jumped on Apprentice (4-5) starter Daniel Lutz in the first two innings, putting up three runs in each frame. Salisbury put together four hits in the first inning with junior Tyler Bennett's single through the right side plating junior Nick Walls for the first run of the day.

First baseman Brian Green started Salisbury's big day of legging out extra base hits. Green drilled a ball to right center field which bounced to the fence. The senior chugged around to third base with Salisbury's first triple of the season, scoring Bennett on the play. Green came home on sophomore Matt Beck's single up the middle for the 3-0 lead.

Salisbury came up with just one hit in the second inning but took advantage of one Builder error, drew a walk and came up with a sacrifice fly to put up three runs. Two of the runs came around as freshman Bill Root came up with his first of two triples on the day.

Root came home to score Salisbury's final run off Lutz in the fourth inning. After Root's one-out triple, Walls knocked a line single to center, driving home the run.

The Sea Gulls plated four runs in the ninth as Root finished off his 3-for-5 day with a single up the middle. Root scored twice and drove in two to lead Salisbury. Bennett was 2-for-5 and drove in three while Green and Beck each went 2-for-4.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Friday afternoon as they travel to St. Mary's (Md.) College to take on the Seahawks. First pitch on Friday is slated for 2 p.m., and the three-game CAC series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday at the SU Baseball Field.
