Box Score 2 FROSTBURG, Md. – The No. 21-ranked Salisbury University baseball team split its Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at Frostburg State University on Sunday afternoon, taking the opener 1-0 before falling 5-3 in the nightcap.
The Sea Gulls (10-7, 8-4 CAC) saw senior pitcher Dustin Herbert throw one of his best games in the first contest. The Huntingtown, Md., native went the distance in the seven-inning affair, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out seven.
The Bobcats only got two runners into scoring position against Herbert, those came on a one-out triple in the fourth and a leadoff double in the fifth. Herbert would not let the runners advance an additional base as he earned his fourth win of the season while lowering his team-leading ERA to 1.59.
Salisbury got its only run of the first game in the top half of the third inning. Sophomore Nick Gentry led off the inning with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on an error. The next batter, freshman Joey Jones, did not miss his opportunity, driving Gentry home with a sacrifice fly for what would end up being the game-winning run.
Salisbury was poised to pick up the doubleheader sweep, breaking a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the sixth inning of the second game. Junior Tyler Bennett opened the frame with a double, advancing to third on senior a single by senior Brian Green. Bennett came home on Chris Connor's single, giving Salisbury the lead, and Green scored on a base knock by Gentry.
The 3-1 lead, however, was short-lived as the Bobcats (9-7, 5-4 CAC) scored four runs in the bottom of the inning on a grand slam by Matt Greene. The loss went to senior Nathan Young, his first of the season. Young pitched well in the outing, allowing just three hits in his 5 1/3 innings of work while striking out a pair.
Salisbury will be on the road on Monday afternoon, traveling to Washington (Md.) College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Sea Gulls will return home on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Virginia Wesleyan College at the SU Baseball Field at 3:30 p.m.
