Herbert ties program record as Gulls take down Gallaudet

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 21-ranked Salisbury University baseball team picked up two wins on Saturday as it defeated Gallaudet University in both games of the day's doubleheader. Senior pitcher Dustin Herbert put his name at the top of the SU record books with his 28th career win in the first game; he is now tied with Nick Dunk (2003-06) and Wyatt Kerley (1976-79) for the most wins in program history.

The Sea Gulls (13-8, 8-4 Capital Athletic Conference) scored in every inning except for the first to take the first game by a score of 8-0. Salisbury gained the lead in the second inning when sophomore infielder Matt Beck singled to drive in senior infielder Brian Green, who had a single to lead off the inning. Beck scored one batter later as freshman outfielder Greg Janofsky singled to drive in the run.

Senior outfielder Brad Baylis led the Gulls with three RBI, all of which came on a bases-loaded double in the third inning. After a one-run third inning, the four-run third inning gave Salisbury a 6-0 lead. The Sea Gulls put up single runs in the sixth and seventh for the 8-0 win.

Janofsky added two RBI with Green, Beck and freshman infielder Ken O'Neill each knocking in one run.

Herbert pitched a complete game, only allowing four hits and striking out 12 Bison batters. The record-tying win was his fifth of the season.

In the second game, Salisbury scored one run in the first inning before taking advantage of three Gallaudet errors in the second inning to break the game open with six runs for a 7-0 lead. The only hit in the inning was a single by Janofsky. The Sea Gulls' runs came on three errors, two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly by Green.

The Gulls exploded for six more runs in the fifth inning that started with an RBI single by freshman outfielder Bill Root. Baylis followed Root with an RBI sacrifice fly before junior catcher Tyler Bennett drove in two runs on a double. Green followed with another RBI double before Beck drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly. After three more runs in the sixth inning, the Gulls captured a 16-0 victory.

Bennett and Beck led the team with four RBI each.

Senior pitcher Nathan Young picked up his second win of the season, pitching a complete game and allowing only three hits with seven strikeouts.

Salisbury will be in action again at the SU Baseball Field on Friday, April 1. The Gulls will be starting a CAC weekend series with Stevenson University. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
