Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team collected an 8-1 victory on Friday afternoon at the SU Baseball Field over Capital Athletic Conference opponent Stevenson University.
Salisbury (14-8, 9-4 CAC) got the scoring started in the home half of the second inning. Sophomore Matt Beck, who reached base after being hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a ground out and scored when freshman Ken O'Neill singled through the right side for the 1-0 lead.
The Sea Gull bats blew things open in the bottom of the third inning, scoring five runs as they took advantage of a pair of Mustang errors and drew three walks. The biggest blow in the inning was a two-run double that just stayed inside the third-base bag off the bat of freshman John Schiotis. Schiotis' shot scored freshman Greg Janofsky and senior Brian Green. Salisbury also had a pair of suicide squeeze bunts in the inning, pulled off by O'Neill and freshman Bill Root.
The six runs was more than enough offense for Salisbury starting pitcher Chris Greiner. The senior worked eight innings, matching his career high, to collect his fourth win of the season, allowing just five hits and a pair of walks while striking out five Stevenson batters. At one point, the Baltimore native retired nine consecutive Mustangs (7-20, 3-10 CAC).
The Salisbury offense was led by the bottom of the order as Beck, Schiotis and O'Neill, batting seventh, eighth and ninth in the order, respectively, combined to go 7-for-11 at the plate. Beck (2-for-3) scored three times while Schiotis (3-for-5) drove in a pair and O'Neill (2-for-3) had three RBI.
The teams will hit the field again on Saturday, finishing out the season series with a CAC doubleheader in Aberdeen, Md. The first pitch between the Mustangs and Sea Gulls is scheduled for 2 p.m.
