Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team began play in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday afternoon, picking up a 4-0 first-round victory over York (Pa.) College. The shutout is Salisbury's sixth of the season.
After going down in order in the first two innings, the Sea Gulls got to York starting pitcher Joey Couch for four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Nick Gentry started the inning with a single to right field. After stealing second base, a pair of groundouts brought the Bel Air, Md., native home with the first run of the game.
The inning was extended by a York error and the Gulls took advantage. Senior Brian Green singled to score freshman Bill Root and senior Dustin Herbert sent two runs home with his single to right field. The final three runs of the inning were unearned.
Salisbury starting pitcher Chris Greiner made the most of the four-run lead. The senior allowed just six hits and a pair of walks while striking out three in eight innings of work.
The toughest spot for the Baltimore native came in the top of the third inning while the game was still scoreless. Rob Klinck opened the inning with a single for York (9-19) and advanced to third when the next batter, Jimmy King doubled to left field. Greiner worked out of the jam with the shutout intact on a groundout to Green at third base, a foul out and a fly out.
Gentry led the way offensively for Salisbury (20-9) with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
Salisbury will have a day off before its second-round game, against an opponent yet to be determined, on Friday afternoon. The Sea Gulls will play the loser of Thursday's first-round game between No. 4 University Mary Washington and No. 3 St. Mary's (Md.) College. Game time on Friday is set for 3:30 p.m., at the SU Baseball Field.
