Box Score 2 ABERDEEN, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team split its Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader against Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon. The Gulls lost a seventh-inning lead in the opener, falling 5-4, but came back with a late-inning run to win the nightcap, 1-0.
Salisbury (15-9, 10-5 CAC) got on the board first in the opening game, scoring a run in the third inning when senior Brad Baylis singled home freshman Bill Root. The 1-0 lead only lasted until the home half of the inning when the Mustangs (8-21, 4-11 CAC) plated two runs.
The teams traded single runs in the fifth inning, as Salisbury's run was knocked home by senior Brian Green, and the Sea Gulls entered the seventh trailing by a run. Junior Tyler Bennett tied the game with a one-out single that scored freshman Ken O'Neill, who had led off the inning with a single, and Green's sacrifice fly scored junior Nick Walls to give the Gulls a 4-3 lead.
But the Mustangs would answer, plating a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to walk off with the win. Senior Dustin Herbert took the loss for the Gulls, as he allowed all five runs, only two earned, while striking out five.
Green led the Gulls offensively in the opening game, going 2-for-3 at the plate, knocking in two runs.
Senior pitcher Nathan Young tossed his second complete game shutout of the year, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out three to pick up the win in the second game.
Salisbury was able to score its lone run in the top of the seventh, using a pair of hits to get to Stevenson pitcher Ryan Kellough. Root got things going with a one-out single and advanced to second on a groundball by Bennett. With two outs, Root scooted home with the winning run from second on Green's single through the left side.
Salisbury has just three CAC games remaining, as the Sea Gulls will take on Wesley College next week. The series begins with a single game in Dover, Del., on Thursday, April 7, before concluding with a doubleheader at the SU Baseball Field on Saturday, April 9. The Wolverines are currently tied with Frostburg State University a game and a half behind the Sea Gulls for the top spot in the CAC. Wesley and FSU are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday.
Salisbury will continue its difficult non-conference slate on Sunday, April 3, traveling to Catholic University of America for a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
