Season ends with 7-2 loss to Keystone at World Series

Box Score

APPLETON, Wis. – The Salisbury University baseball team saw its 2011 season come to an end on Sunday afternoon, falling to Keystone College, 7-2, at the College World Series.

The Giants (38-11) grabbed the early lead, scoring on the first batter of the game as Esteban Meletiche opened the game with a solo home run off Salisbury starting pitcher Nathan Young.

The one-run lead lasted only until the second inning, when Salisbury was able to tie the game. Junior Tyler Bennett opened the inning with a double and scored on an error later in the inning to even the score at 1-1.

Keystone scored in the top of the third and held the 2-1 edge until a sacrifice fly by senior Brian Green scored freshman John Schiotis to tie the game at 2-2.

Young would allow just one more Keystone run in the game, the game winner in the top of the seventh, on a sacrifice fly by Meletiche. Young worked seven innings in the game, allowing just six hits while striking out a pair.

Salisbury (34-14) could not score again after tying the game in the fifth inning, getting just two more base runners in the final four innings. Junior Nick Walls singled in the sixth and walked in the ninth, but could not advance past first base.

Walls and Bennett each finished with two hits in the game while freshman Ken O'Neill and Schiotis each had one hit.

Keystone capped the game with four runs in the ninth inning.

The loss brings an end to the careers of eight Sea Gulls: Drew Baldwin, Brad Baylis, Green, Chris Greiner, Dustin Herbert, Fred Kreiger, Devon Quaglietta, and Young. The group has been successful during their career, as the program has posted a 143-39 record over the past four years including a pair of CAC championships and the program's third World Series appearance.
