Sea Gulls fall in double-overtime thriller to Marlins

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team dropped a tough contest to No. 15 Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday as the Sea Gulls fell, 3-2, in double overtime at the SU Soccer Complex. The contest between the two teams has followed the trend over the past three seasons as VWC has won by a single goal in each matchup. It was the third double-overtime affair for SU this season.

Salisbury (2-3-2) opened the scoring when 34 minutes into the first frame, senior forward Sarah Jessilonis took a pass just outside of the box and ripped a perfectly executed shot into the bottom-right corner of the net. The lead looked to stand firm, but Virginia Wesleyan (6-0-0) tied the game up with only 16 minutes remaining in regulation as Christina Fernandes scored on a fast break.

The Sea Gulls did not wait long to steal the lead back as just a few minutes later, freshman forward Morgan Brasch took a ball from freshman defender Christina Anderson and headed a shot just over the outstretched arms of Marlin goalkeeper Erica Keil (six saves) and into the upper-left side of the goal for a 2-1 SU lead.

VWC answered with a score of its own a minute later when Bre Ingargiola scored to even the game at two. The score would remain the same until the second overtime when VWC's Angel Horowitz catapulted the Marlins to their sixth victory of the year with a goal in the 101st minute.

SU, which had 10 players record shots on the day, outshot the Marlins 18-11 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Salisbury was led by Jessilonis, who registered a season-high seven shots (five on goal) and one score. Junior defender Erin Mooney and freshman midfielder Kristin Butzke each ripped two shots of their own. Freshman goalkeeper Michelle Conrad tallied three saves in the loss.

Salisbury returns to action on Monday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m., when it hosts Rowan University at the SU Soccer Complex. The contest is the second of five consecutive home games for the Sea Gulls.
