No. 20 men's soccer falls at Mary Washington in CAC opener, 2-1

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The University of Mary Washington built a two-goal advantage nine minutes into the second half and held on for a 2-1 victory over the No. 20 Salisbury University men's soccer team in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday.

UMW's Omar Ismail scored the game-winning goal on a feed from Nick Shepherd in the 54th minute and the Eagles handed Salisbury (4-1-1, 0-1-0 CAC) its first loss of the season.

Junior Trevor Sharpe cut the deficit to one in the 84th minute on an assist from senior Jimmy Mundy. The goal was Sharpe's second of the season. The Sea Gulls, though, couldn't find the equalizer in the final six minutes as Mary Washington (3-3-0, 1-0-0) hung on.

Matt Poole got the Eagles on the scoreboard in the 46th minute on a goal also assisted by Shepherd.

UMW goalkeeper Blake Weiss made 11 saves to earn the win while SU junior goalie John Vnenchak (four saves) took the loss.

SU had a 22-10 edge in shots and 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Salisbury is back in action hosting No. 1-ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday at the SU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
