Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University field hockey team remained unbeaten in the 2011 season with a 4-0 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) College on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.
The Sea Gulls (8-0, 2-0 Capital Athletic Conference) controlled the first half, collecting 11 shots and 14 penalty corners, while keeping the Seahawks (3-5, 1-1 CAC) at bay with no shots or penalty corners. The first goal of the half came at the 4:16 mark off a penalty corner as junior Kristina Fusco collected a pass from senior Tara McGovern and flicked it into the net.
SU would continue to keep the ball in its offensive half, but would not score again until 26 minutes into the game off yet another penalty corner. This time Fusco would assist senior Courtney Webster as she slammed the ball from the top of the circle into the back of the boards.
The second half was more of the same as the Sea Gulls dominated play earning nine penalty corners and taking nine shots. However, the score would not change until there was 10 minutes remaining in the match. Salisbury was awarded a penalty stroke which Fusco successfully converted, bringing the score to 3-0.
The final goal of the game came by the way of junior Erica Henderson as she ripped the ball, off a pass from Webster, from the left side into the goal to bring the final score to 4-0.
The Salisbury defense earned its third shutout of the season, allowing no shots and just one penalty corner, which came in the final 20 seconds of the contest.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 28, when they travel to Stevenson University to continue CAC play. That game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
