SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day and nearly pulled off the upset over No. 9 Lynchburg College, falling 4-1 Sunday afternoon. The Sea Gulls played Lynchburg tough the entire contest but were unable to match the offensive firepower of the Hornets.

Lynchburg (13-0-3) got on the board first, with a goal from Angela Bosco at the 31:42 mark in the first half. Bosco took possession of the ball at midfield and dribbled up the right side of the field past two Salisbury (8-5) defenders and put a shot past Salisbury goalie Michelle Conrad.

The Sea Gulls nearly got an immediate equalizer when junior forward Colleen O'Connell had a free run in the middle of the field in the offensive third just 20 seconds after the Lynchburg goal. O'Connell was able to keep possession after a Hornet defender challenged her and got off a shot inside the 18-yard box. Lynchburg goalie Aubrey Brown was able to get a piece of the shot and a Lynchburg defender was able to clear the zone.

Salisbury was right back on the attack though and got on the board when Lynchburg was called for a foul and senior Erin Mooney lined up a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box and put it past Brown for the equalizer at the 34:32 mark. That would prove to be the only goal of the game for the Sea Gulls.

Lynchburg added what proved to be the deciding tally 1:33 later to take a 2-1 lead into the half. The Hornets added two second-half goals to widen their lead for the final margin of victory.

Salisbury played a strong defensive game against the potent Hornets' offense. Seniors Bonnie Sandone and Mooney, junior Alex Gower, sophomores Jackie Holtzman and Jamie Hovendon, and freshmen Tabitha Brown and Heather Deamond each turned in a stellar effort inside the Salisbury defensive third in support of Conrad.

Prior to the contest, Head Coach Jim Nestor and the program honored the five seniors on this year's squad - Casey Hafford, Mooney, Melissa Orgera, Sarah Pfundstein and Sandone.

Salisbury will next be in action this coming Wednesday, hosting Route 13 and Capital Athletic Conference rival Wesley College. That match is set to begin at 3 p.m., at the SU Soccer Complex.
