Sea Gull offense ignites in 12-0 win over Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. - The second-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team finished out its Capital Athletic Conference regular-season schedule with a 12-0 win against Frostburg State University on Sunday.

The Sea Gulls started the offensive outburst early in the game with a goal from senior midfielder Kristina Fusco. Sophomore midfielder Summer Washburn provided the assist on the eighth-minute tally.

The next two Salisbury (13-1, 4-1 CAC) goals came within a minute of each other with junior forward Rebecca Hasz scoring at the 15:23 mark and senior forward Erica Henderson following with a goal at the 16:06 mark.

Freshman forward Samantha Johnson put Salisbury's fourth goal of the half into the cage in the 21st minute off of an assist from sophomore forward Karen Cindea.

The Gulls took a 4-0 lead into the half, along with a big advantage on the stat sheet, outshooting the Bobcats, 22-4. The Sea Gulls also drew seven penalty corners.

Salisbury saw its offense explode for eight goals in the second half, including three from junior forward Mallory Elliott

Elliott scored Salisbury's first two of the half, less than one minute apart, in the 44th and 45th minutes.

The Sea Gulls dominated the second half on the stat sheet as well with 29 shots and seven more penalty corners.

Henderson, senior forward Melissa Slocum, junior back Lindsay Lloyd, junior midfielder Stacey Lamboni and junior forward Leigh Willing all scored goals in the half, as well.

For the game, Salisbury outshot Frostburg, 51-10, and attempted 14 penalty corners.

Both Salisbury goalies saw time in the game as sophomore Rachel Clewer played 56:50, making four saves and freshman Cassie Kinney played 13:10, stopping one shot.

Alli Elliott and Rachel Merritt had three shots apiece to lead Frostburg State (7-3, 0-5). Maggie Edwards played at 70 minutes in goal, stopping 26 shots.

The Sea Gulls will be in action again on Tuesday at Sea Gull Stadium as The College of New Jersey comes to Salisbury; the game is set for 6 p.m.
