Box Score 2 RIVERDALE, Md. – The No. 9 Salisbury University baseball team collected 17 runs and 19 hits to sweep a doubleheader from Gallaudet University, 8-4 and 9-2, at the Riverdale Recreation Center on Saturday.
Sophomore second baseman Johnny Schiotis was 4-for-7 with three runs scored, a double, triple and two runs batted in while senior catcher Tyler Bennett batted 3-for-6 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs to lead Salisbury (3-0).
The Sea Gulls took a 6-0 lead after three innings in the opener. With two outs in the first inning, Bennett singled to center field, moved to second on a balk and scored on consecutive GU errors for a 1-0 lead. Then, with runners on first and second, sophomore third baseman Quinn Griffith singled to left to score junior designated hitter Chris Connor. Bison right-hander William Chapman bounced two straight pitches, allowing both Schiotis and Griffith to cross the plate.
SU scored two runs in the third without the benefit of a hit as Griffith and Schiotis came in again on one of two Gallaudet (0-2) errors in the frame.
The Bison got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth off of Jeff Hoffman (2-0). William Bissell and Jeremy Adams notched back-to-back two-out RBI hits to pull within 6-2.
After an RBI double by junior Nick Walls in the fifth and a Bennett run-scoring single in the sixth, Gallaudet scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin.
Hoffman picked up his second straight win to begin the season, going four innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts and one walk.
Chapman (0-1) took the loss in scattering three hits, two walks and six unearned runs while fanning four.
The Bison took a 2-1 lead in the second inning of the nightcap after scoring once each in the first two innings but Salisbury used a Schiotis two-out RBI double to left in the third, scoring Connor from first, to tie the game at 2-2 and went ahead in the fourth when junior Hank Adams scored on a wild pitch.
The Sea Gulls tacked on a run in the fifth inning to make it 4-2 on Bennett's homer to left field before exploding for five in the six to put the game away. The first four batters reached base safely to set up the inning. Sophomore Bill Root, Bennett, Connor and Griffith each tallied RBIs in the inning.
Junior right-hander Andrew Levy (1-0) went five innings for the win. He gave up GU's two runs and three hits while striking out nine and allowing just one walk. Freshmen Brett Collacchi and Dylan Anderson pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to complete the sweep. Adams (0-1) absorbed the loss on the mound for the Bison, lasting five innings and allowing eight runs (six earned).
Salisbury's game, scheduled for Sunday against the No. 5 State University of New York at Cortland, has been cancelled due to inclement weather but the Gulls are back in action, hosting SUNY New Paltz in a three-game set on Feb. 25-26.
