Box Score 2 SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 9 Salisbury University baseball team rebounded for an 11-3 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against the State University of New York at New Paltz after dropping a 1-0 decision in 11 innings in the opener at the SU Baseball Field on Saturday.
SU (4-1) hung seven runs on New Paltz in the first inning of the nightcap and got four innings of three-hit pitching from junior right-hander Andrew Levy (2-0).
Senior designated hitter Chris Connor and sophomore center fielder Bill Root collected two hits apiece and sophomore third baseman Quinn Griffith drove in four runs to pace the game two win.
Salisbury sent 12 men to the plate in the first inning. Already up, 2-0, Griffith shot a sharp groundball through the left side, scoring Johnny Schiotis and Connor. Root later added his second hit of the inning, an RBI single to right field to push the lead to 6-0. Junior right fielder Nick Gentry had an RBI groundout for the final run of the inning.
That was all the Sea Gulls needed but they tacked on two more runs in each of the second and third innings.
Levy fanned two and allowed three walks with one unearned run. Andrew Grann (0-1) couldn't make it out of the first inning and took the loss. He allowed seven runs (six earned) with two hits and three walks.
New Paltz's Chris Chismar and SU's Devin Gardner went toe-to-toe on the mound in the first game. Chismar lasted seven innings, gave up just two hits and struck out seven. Gardner countered with nine strikeouts in nine innings.
With one out in the top of the 11th inning Anthony Reppetto singled to right off of Bill Morton (0-1). Paul Merola hit into a fielder's choice at first but, in try to force Repetto at second, Matt Beck overthrew the bag, allowing Repetto to advance to third. Thomas Pinnola then lifted a ball to center field for sacrifice fly for the winning run.
SU mounted a threat in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Bennett was hit by a pitch with one out and stole second but Connor lined into a double play to end the game.
Chris Pyz (1-0) picked up the win for the Hawks in four no-hit innings.
The teams play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 11 a.m.
