Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – Junior Hank Adams lined the first pitch he saw into left field with the one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, scoring classmate Nick Gentry to lift the No. 9 Salisbury University baseball team to a come-from-behind 7-6 win over the State University of New York at New Paltz at the SU Baseball Field on Sunday.
Gentry led off the ninth with a single to right off New Paltz's Nick Monaco (0-1) and Tyler Bennett coaxed a walk. With one out, Johnny Schiotis worked the count full before earning another free pass to load the bases.
Mike Sparacino came on to face Adams and gave up the walk-off hit.
Adams finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and four runs batted in while Bill Root was also 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
The SU (5-1) comeback began in the seventh, trailing, 6-4. Root and Gentry each singled to put runners on first and third with one out. Gentry stole second before Bennett hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate Root, cutting the deficit in half.
The Sea Gulls used a two-out rally in the eighth to tie the game at 6-6. Schiotis lined out to center and Adams struck out but New Paltz reliever Michael Pinnola hit Quinn Griffith with a 1-0 pitch, sending him to first base. Kyle Hayman pinch ran for Griffith and moved up on a walk by Greg Janofsky. Then, Ken O'Neill popped the ball up on the infield but shortstop Paul Merola dropped it, allowing Hayman to come in.
Senior Stephen Miller (1-0) worked a scoreless top of the ninth to set the stage for the drama in the last of the inning.
Salisbury scored four in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Bennett doubled to left to plate Root with one out and three batters later, Adams drove a double to the gap in right-center field to empty the bases, scoring Schiotis, Chris Connor and Bennett.
New Paltz (1-2) came back with four runs in the top of the second off starter Jeff Hoffman and reliever Danny Druzgala to knot the game. Thomas Pinnola scored on a Hoffman wild pitch and consecutive walks forced in another run. Matt Prescia made it 4-3 with a sacrifice fly prior to Druzgala surrendering a game-tying single to Matt Kaldon.
The Hawks added runs in the fourth and sixth innings for the lead.
Thomas Pinolla led New Paltz, batting 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.
SU hosts Washington (Md.) College for a single game on Friday at 2:30 p.m., prior to beginning Capital Athletic Conference play with a three-game set at Wesley College Saturday and Sunday.
