Collacchi, offense help No. 8 Salisbury past Albertus Magnus, 13-4

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Freshman right hander Brett Collacchi pitched six strong innings and Kyle Hayman and Joey Jones hit a combined 5-for-10 with five runs scored and four driven in as the No. 8 Salisbury University baseball team defeated Albertus Magnus College, 13-4, at the SU Baseball Field on Friday.

Collacchi (3-0) earned his third win in as many starts, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts and two walks. Hayman batted 3-for-5 with three singles, three runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base. Jones was 2-for-5 with a double, a sacrifice fly, three runs scored and two RBIs on the day.

Salisbury (12-3) scored in every inning but the second, pounding out a season-high 19 hits. Heading to the bottom of the fourth, tied 3-3, the Sea Gulls scored nine runs over the next five innings to take firm control.

Hayman singled to left field to start the rally in the fourth. Bobby Sanzone moved Hayman into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before Jones singled up the middle to put runners on first and third. Jones advanced on a wild pitch by Albertus Magnus starter Matthew Finkenzeller (0-1) and Chris Gaines followed with an RBI groundout to score Hayman and take a 4-3 lead. Tyler Bennett singled down the left-field line, plating Jones to increase the lead.

Finkenzeller took the loss for the Falcons, surrendering nine runs and 12 hits in four innings.

In the fifth, the big blow came from Hayman with a two-run single to left with no one out to make it a 7-3. Finkenzeller was relieved by Mike Barillaro, who allowed an inherited runner and one of his own to come in before getting out of the inning.

The Sea Gulls tacked on four more runs in their final three at-bats for the final margin.

Albertus Magnus (0-6) got on the scoreboard in the top of the second when Pete Haggerty scored on a two-out throwing error by shortstop Ken O'Neill, who atoned for the miscue in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single to knot the game, 1-1.

The Falcons took the lead with two runs in the third, but Hank Adams tied the game for Salisbury at 3-3 with a two-out, two-run single down the right field line, scoring Bennett and Gaines.

Robert Gambardella went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead Albertus Magnus.

Salisbury now travels to Fredericksburg, Va., to face the University of Mary Washington in a three-game Capital Athletic Conference series. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., on Saturday and a single game at noon on Sunday.
