Box Score YORK, Pa. – The No. 4 Salisbury University baseball team climbed within one victory of clinching the top seed in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference tournament with a 3-2 victory at York (Pa.) College on Friday.
Sophomore centerfielder Bill Root and senior designated hitter Chris Connor each had two hits while starting pitcher Andrew Levy improved to 5-1 on the season with 6 1/3 strong innings on the hill.
Salisbury (22-4, 11-2 CAC) got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning off York starter Tommy Moran. Sophomore third baseman Quinn Griffith led off the frame with a single through right side and came around to score on a one-out triple to left-center field by sophomore Johnny Schiotis.
The Salisbury lead doubled when Schiotis came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Matt Beck.
The Sea Gulls tacked on their third run of the game in the top of the third as senior Tyler Bennett scampered home on a two-out single by Connor. Bennett singled to center field with two down and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Connor's base knock.
Levy pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the third before surrendering a run to the Spartans (11-15, 7-5 CAC) in the bottom of the fourth. A double and an error, followed by a sacrifice bunt, gave York two runners in scoring position with just one out. Salisbury's junior hurler got a groundout for the inning's second out before a wild pitch allowed Dustin Worthman to score an unearned run, cutting the Gulls' edge to 3-1.
The Spartans chased Levy in the bottom of the seventh after a triple and a one-out walk. Junior Danny Druzgala came on, allowing one inherited runner to score on one of three Salisbury errors in the game, cutting the Sea Gull lead to one, 3-2. But York would strand the potential tying run at third as Druzgala got a groundout and flyout to end the threat.
Senior Stephen Miller came on in the ninth, picking up his second save of the season with a perfect inning to finish off the win.
Levy scattered five hits and walked a pair while striking out three. Moran took the loss, giving up 10 hits and a pair of walks in 7 1/3 innings.
The teams will finish the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon. A win in either game will clinch the top seed in the CAC tournament (April 17-22) for the Sea Gulls.
